Painting for Dummies: New Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is one of the most vital steps in the painting process. It ensures that the paint you applied will adhere, last long, and not be susceptible to several paint defects such as cracks, tears, sagging, chalking, efflorescence, peeling, blistering, flaking, etc.

Today, we will discuss the proper surface preparation of new bare wood, metal, concrete wall, and concrete floor surfaces.

New Bare Wood Surface

      1. Sand the whole surface using 120 grit sandpaper.

2. Fill holes, dents, and uneven surfaces using Shuretite Wood Filler for wood finishes or Triton Automotive Lacquer Putty for duco finish.

3. Sand the puttied areas to even the surface.

4. Remove the sanding dust by wiping it off the surface using a clean dry brush, broom, or rag.

5. Finish the process by coating the whole surface with Triton Sanding Sealer (wood finish) or Triton Automotive Lacquer Primer (duco finish).

     8. Light sand the puttied or grouted areas with 120 grit sandpaper.
